Happy New Year’s Eve!

Here’s what the  Time’s Square Ball looked like when it dropped for the very first time back in 1907.

Things have changed a bit since then :)  On November 11th, 2008, The co-organizers of New Year’s Eve in Times Square (Times Square Alliance, Countdown Entertainment) unveiled a new Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball at a press conference at Hudson Scenic Studio in Yonkers, New York.

The new Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is a 12 foot geodesic sphere, double the size of previous Balls, and weighs 11,875 pounds.  Covered in 2,668 Waterford Crystals and powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDS, the new Ball is capable of creating a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns producing a spectacular kaleidoscope effect atop One Times Square.

The organizers also announced that the new Ball will become a year-round attraction above Times Square in full public view January through December.

The Liberal VFW is hosting a New Year’s Eve dance, featuring the local band Stoic.  They play classic rock and solid gold oldies.  The event starts up at 9pm and there will be champagne and party favors!  Entry is $10 per person and you don’t have to be a member to attend.  FMI call 624-7447.

The schools are out for the holidays, but the Liberal Parks & Rec Center has plenty planned for the youth during the break!

  • Wednesday 12/31 - New Year’s Eve Celebration - Games, snacks, and lots of fun.

  • Friday 1/2/09 - Indoor Dodgeball @ 2pm.

  • Tuesday 12/30 - Casino Day - come in and play dominoes, black jack, yatzee, uno, spoons and more.

  • Friday 1/2/09 - Indoor Dodgeball @ 2pm.

OzzBlog Christmas Eve 12/24/8

Reprinted here  is the holiday classic response from The Sun newspaper in New York City to eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s question about the existence of Santa Claus. The story goes that Virginia’s friends had told her that there was no Santa Claus. So the little girl asked her father about it, who told her to write to The Sun. The September 21, 1897 answer from writer Francis P. Church has been making glad the heart of childhood ever since.

Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in ‘The Sun’ it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

-Virginia O’Hanlon, 115 West 95th Street

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except (what) they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

[click on the pic at the top for a full history about this, and Virginia, on Wikipedia]

And now it’s YOUR turn.  I’m gonna stop here and let YOU leave comments to today’s OzzBlog or send me emails of things to add to it.  I really hope you’ll participate!!

GREETINGS

The gals in the kitchen at SWMC wish Blake Ozz a very merry christmas and a great musical new year.

Merry Christmas Ozz!  In the days with my kids at home, I had a Cassette Tape, (yes, I’m dated!) of the Oakridge Boys Christmas that I played over and over again as we decorated the Christmas tree, hung the lights & baked all the goodies that were tradition in my family growing up. Wake up to your show every morning.  My husband and I have noted at many Wedding Dances that it is “our music” that gets the younger generation out on the dance floor!  Am so glad 107 still plays the “Good stuff”  Have a Merry Christmas!

I hope you have too much fun and eat too much and have a wonderful Christmas!

OzzBlog Tuesday 12/16/8

A 4-year-old boy in Beaumont, Texas, set off a burglar alarm at a local dollar store after he entered it at 3:00 a.m. to play with some toys. Cops say that the child apparently unlocked the door to his family home, snuck out and crossed a multi-lane street to reach the store a few blocks away.  Cops say the child was friendly, talkative and appeared well cared for. Child Protective Services is investigating, as a precaution, but cops say there’s nothing to indicate the parents or family did anything wrong. (KFDM-TV) Click HERE for  surveillance video of the tiny prowler, courtesy of KFDM.com.

According to DrawAHouse.com, the way you draw a house says a lot about your personality. They say you can use the site to draw a house, answer some questions based on your house then find out what your house says about you.  HERE is the link to the test.

I’m STILL looking for pictures of YOUR Christmas trees and I’ve decided that I’ll make a contest out of it. You send your pics to blakeozz@gmail.com and I’ll pick my favorite tree and the winner will be able to pick ANY one prize from the box of goodies that were given away but never picked up by the prizewinners!

In the meantime, here’s a project for the kiddos:
