66TH ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS WINNERS
The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards returned this year with all the glitz and glamor that could be expected from one of Hollywood’s biggest nights. Due to the writers’ strike, a dry news conference was held last year in lieu of the traditional glitzy ceremony. That’s all the more reason why 2009 attracted a who’s who list of celebrities for the Hollywood Foreign Press bash last night (January 11th) in Los Angeles.
The rags-to-riches drama and love story, Slumdog Millionaire, had a huge night, winning Best Drama in a Motion Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score. The flick’s British director, Danny Boyle, also took home the Best Director nod.
Kate Winslet’s two major wins surprised many at the Globes. Early in the evening, she was awarded Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for The Reader, beating front-runner Penelope Cruz, who was nominated for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Upon accepting her first award, Winslet told the crowd, “I have a habit of not winning things.” After all, the British star lost five times in the past, both at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. But it was when her name was called for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for Revolutionary Road that she really became flustered. She quickly got teary-eyed and was at a complete loss for words. The honor was even more surprising after last week’s computer glitch, which “randomly marked” Anne Hathaway as the Best Actress in a Motion Picture winner on the Golden Globes website.
One of the night’s biggest moments came when the late Heath Ledger won a posthumous award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for The Dark Knight. It was almost a year ago when Ledger, who portrayed the villainous Joker in the Batman movie, died of an accidental prescription drug overdose. His Globe win was met with a standing ovation, along with some tears. Dark Knight director Chris Nolan accepted the honor, telling the crowd that Ledger “will be eternally missed…but he will never be forgotten.”
The Wrestler also took home multiple awards. Mickey Rourke won Best Actor in a Motion Picture, and Bruce Springsteen received the Best Original Song honor for his new track, “The Wrestler.”
Then there were the non-winners. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt and Frost/Nixon led the Globes with five nominations each, but they all failed to take home any awards.
As for the television honors, HBO scored big last night, sweeping up several awards, many of which were for the television mini-series John Adams. Paul Giamatti won Best Actor in a TV Mini-Series, and Laura Linney took home her first-ever Golden Globe award in the Best Actress in a TV Mini-Series category. Tom Wilkinson received his first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Mini-Series for John Adams. Also winning last night was actor Gabriel Byrne from HBO’s In Treatment and actress Anna Paquin, star of HBO’s True Blood series.
NBC’s 30 Rock also had a huge night, picking up three awards, including Best TV Series — Comedy. For the second consecutive year, the show’s star and creator Tina Fey walked away with the award for Best Actress in a TV Series — Comedy. Her co-star Alec Baldwin won Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series — Comedy, marking his second win for the same role.
A&E’s 1960s hit show, Mad Men, won Best Television Series — Drama.
