We have a new Pancake Day Baby!
Lizbeth Cristma Garay made her appearance at Southwest Medical Center at 8:22 a.m. on February 25, weighing in at 8 pounds and 10 ounces. She was 20.5 inches long. Welcoming her were her proud parents, Vilma Florescarranza and Jesus Garay of Ulysses, Kansas. Lizbeth and her parents received a gift basket from the International Pancake Day Board and a stroller from Southwest Medical Center for being the first baby born at Southwest Medical Center on or after Pancake Day 2009. Lizbeth is wearing her new apron and scarf presented to her from the Pancake Board.

Twenty-two year old Tasha Gallegos won the International Pancake Day race in a record time of :57.5 seconds Tuesday. The former LHS and WSU track star bested a record of :58.1 seconds set by Lisa Spillman in 2001. Gallegos had to be on her game considering Olney’s Jane Hughes ran the race in 1:02. It was the fastest Olney time since 1998 when Natalie Thomas ran the race in :58.5. Michelle McNabb came in second place for the second time in three years edging out Jeanette Contreras who took third. Tara Bruce placed fourth and MiKayla Knudsen was fifth. Gallegos is a 2003 Liberal High School graduate. She helped Liberal win three state championships. She was an NCAA qualifier in the 400 hurdles at Wichita State.
Race winner Jane Hughes poses by the clock after winning the annual Olney Pancake Race in 2009. Get the full story at the Wichita Eagle Kansas.com site … though the facts about it being a record time in Olney is incorrect.

- Billie Warden wins the Pancake Race in Liberal, Kansas, 1950

- Olney, England: Wins Pancake Race. Mrs. Doris Millward, 30 year old mother of two children, demonstrates how to toss a pancake after winning the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race in the Village of Olney, February 22nd. The British housewife covered the 415-yard run in the time of 1 minute, 18.5 seconds, flipping a pancake in a skillet three times. In Liberal, Kansas, Mrs. Binnie Dick scurried over the S-shaped course in 1 minute, 5.1 seconds to keep the International Pancake Racing title in the United States. It marked the third time in the six years of competition between the women of Liberal and Olney that the Kansas town captured the title. The official results were established by Transatlantic Telephone.

Stay tuned to B1075 for live coverage of the breakfast and the race! For a schedule of events go to www.pancakeday.net
Looking for mid to upper 50’s for a race temp this year - MUCH nicer than last year!

Where in the world is Osama bin Laden?
Two University of California geography professors think they may know where Osama bin Laden is hiding. Using satellite-imagery analysis and geographic methods, Professors Thomas Gillespie and John Agnew have theorized that the al-Qaida leader is holed up in the city of Parachinar in the mountains of northwestern Pakistan, about 12 miles from the Afghan border. They have narrowed it down even more, thinking he may be in one of three walled compounds in the city. To come to their conclusions, Gillespie and Agnew used bin Laden’s last reported whereabouts in the mountains of Tora Bora and, quote, “theories that predict how plants and animals distribute themselves over space and over time.” Parachinar is named as a likely hideout, where bin Laden could have electricity, physical protection, privacy and a small number of bodyguards, while remaining protected from aerial view. They also said being in or near a large city would reduce the risk of him being found in a military raid, and that Parachinar has a history of housing Islamic fighters during the Soviet invasion of neighboring Afghanistan two decades ago.

OzzBlog Wednesday 2/18/9
Pete Townshend took time out to answer fans’ questions and post his responses on thewho.com. Townshend, as usual, was honest and blunt when talking about his work and career, yet didn’t hold back in telling fans when he thought they had crossed the line into his personal life.
He was asked about his “perspective on the current economic meltdown” to which he said, “The people I am most concerned about are the blue-collar guys and families who depend on the house market being buoyant. Many of these hard-working decent people are our fans, and I hate to see them struggling. I have no idea how it happened.”
Townshend was called to task about saying back in the mid-’80s that “hope and optimism” were two “filthy and disgusting words.” He was asked if he’s changed his opinion now that President Barack Obama has inspired millions with those same words. Townshend responded: “I was probably being ironic. Hope and optimism had been thrashed out of we British by (former Prime Minister) Margaret Thatcher. The words had been devalued I suppose. As for (President) Obama, I’m in music not politics and I think he’s a pretty good dancer.”
When asked about his musical relationship with Track Records labelmate Jimi Hendrix — as well as Hendrix’s spiritual beliefs, Townshend explained, “I knew Jimi only slightly. I helped him with his amplifiers when he first came to London. I jammed with him backstage a few times. Back then I wasn’t keen on jamming and I’m not mad about it today. I have no idea what he believed in. I think reincarnation is a possibility, but it isn’t useful to worry about it because it can’t be proved.”
A fan asked him if maybe composing someplace away from home might spur him on to recording and releasing more music, Townshend snapped: “I am doing fine. I don’t need advice or help, but thanks. I have a feeling that retreating to a warm island would not help me compose another ‘WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN.’”
He shed light on the meaning behind the title to the Who By Numbers classic “Blue Red & Grey,” explaining, “This song is about the difference between me and most other musicians of my era. They tended to stay up all night. I had children pretty early in my life, and I wanted to be their father not an absent rock ‘n’ roll ghost, and didn’t live that way. The colors mentioned are those of the sunset, sunrise and grey gloom of the early hours in this country.”
When asked about his “kind decision” to perform the Who’s 1975 classic “Slip Kid” during their Christmas London shows ending a 32-year moratorium on the tune, Townshend joked, “I don’t know about fans, but Roger (Daltrey) has asked to play ‘Slip Kid’ in every rehearsal for the last thirty years. I just gave in, but you’re right, I made a very kind decision.”
Worst toy of the year: Dallas Cowboys Barbie

You probably don’t want your kids playing with guns, knives or feral cats, but how about dolls that actually poop, miniature Cadillac Escalade SUVs or tricycles hooked up to the TV screen? Those topped the list of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood’s TOADY Awards, which stands for Toys Oppressive And Destructive to Young Children.
The winner of the award, beating out a field of impressive candidates, was the Barbie Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Doll, for children ages 6 and up. It comes with stiletto boots and a halter top. Rah! Rah!
“When you combine two classic symbols of gendered stereotypes — the Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and Barbie — you get one terrible toy,” CCFC Steering Committee member Joe Kelly said in a news release.
The CCFC says 6,000 people voted on the awards, and doesn’t mince words when describing the toys. Here’s an excerpt from its diatribe on the Escalade toy:
Who needs to pedal? Now your 3-year-old can drive their own icon of excess at speeds up to five miles per hour! With its $349.99 price tag, you can prove to your neighbors that you aren’t affected by the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. And who cares about the environment, either? Teach your children to love their gas guzzlers; a real life Escalade gets all of 14 miles per gallon!
The campaign released the awards in advance of this weekend’s TOTY awards, in which the Toy Industry Assn. decides on the year’s best toys. If you want to learn about some other bizarre toys, check out the TIA website. Nominees include a talking pink doll house (no, it’s not haunted), the Bakugan Battle Brawlers Battle Pack (for teaching your child about elocution) and the Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker (no boys allowed).
Presumably your daughter could feed said cupcakes to her TOADY-nominated Caucasian pooping doll and find out how digestion really works.

Simpson’s New Opening Sequence
After 20 years the Simpsons have changed their opening sequence. This week the show had its premier in HD and with it brought the first revamp of the main titles since 1989.
While some of the old parts remain (Bart still writes on the chalk board, Lisa still saxes her way out of music class, and Homer still throws radioactive material down his shirt) most of it has changed to catch up on 20-seasons worth of character additions. Apu’s octuplets now appear in the opening as do Maggie’s nemesis, the unibrow baby, and the crazy Texan millionaire, all added since the original sequence was created.
As a side note to fans, check out Marge’s groceries, they have changed to include tomacco juice, and Mr. Sparkle detergent.
